Partial Discharge Testing on Medium Voltage Cables
Partial Discharge Testing on Medium Voltage Cables
Electrical partial discharge (PD) testing of shielded power cable systems has become popular over the past several years, but did you know that there is considerable difference in measuring PD using factory-style test methods versus field test methods. The measurement of PD in the field is a complicated subject that involves significant skill and experience. There is a considerable amount of information that must be gathered before rushing into testing. This information includes type of cable insulation (extruded or laminated); type of metallic shield; approximate cable length; ability to access and isolate cable segments; termination connector type and accessories; availability of power for the test equipment --- just to mention a few items. Next, you will need to determine the best or most practical voltage source for applying the test voltage. Each voltage source offers different advantages and limitation and can be categorized as Power Frequency sources; Near Power Frequency voltage sources; and Alternative voltage sources of various waveshapes.
This 20-hour, instructor-led, online course is intended to assist cable owners and testing companies navigate through diagnostic testing of new or service-aged, installed shielded power cable systems, which include cable, joints, and terminations, using electrical partial discharge detection, measurement, and location.
